Everyone can benefit from good counseling--especially at turning points in our lives (e.g. marriage, pregnancy, job change, aging
parents, retirement).
Some utilize counseling for personal growth—to better understand themselves and their relationships.
But, far and away, most people enter counseling because they feel ‘stuck’, out of control or without the perspective or tools to
navigate a life-crisis. Below is a list of common reasons people are seeking counseling. Consider calling us if and when you are:
- Facing major life changes and challenges (e.g. Leaving home, changing jobs, marrying, etc.
- Becoming parents, illness, separating or divorcing, retiring and aging
- Becoming irritated, tearful, frightened or angry for no apparent reason
- Experiencing extreme job stress or ongoing family problems
- Suffering with anxiety, worries, sadness, fatigue, fears, low-self confidence
- Caught up in a pattern of unhealthy or compulsive behavior (e.g.excessive or habitual eating, problems, smoking, gambling, drug use, compulsive sexuality or abusive relationships)
- Mourning and grieving a loss
- Reliving the impact and effects of a traumatic event, abuse or neglect
People should consider consulting with a counselor for any/ all of the above situations (others as well)—WHEN :
- Support and advice from friends or family just isn’t helping and you feel like you’re ‘going nowhere’
- Life seems to have lost its zest and purpose and you don’t have the energy or motivation to change things
- When you feel like you can’t manage daily stresses and responsibilities
- When a problem or mood is negatively effecting your sleep, concentration, work or the quality of your relationship with others
- When the problems in life seem insurmountable and thoughts of hurting yourself , being hurt, or hurting some else arise
Interestingly, one of the best indicators for when to seek counseling is when you find yourself questioning whether you should see a counselor or when those you love and trust suggest you see a therapist. Trust your instincts and the feedback and advice of those
that really know you well.
Effective counseling offers emotional support, perspective and guidance, helping your:
- Identifying and clarifying your problems and understanding what factors contribute to them.
- Developing more rewarding approaches to old, non-productive attitudes and behavior
- Regaining a sense of control and pleasure in life.
- Healing old hurts, forgiving yourself and others, and moving on.
- Discovering and building upon your unique personal strengths and gifts.
